Welcome!

The Ministry of Economic Development (MED) has been formed with a mandate to oversee all trade and business related activities. These include the registration of intellectual property, businesses, investments, companies and others. The mandate also includes the formulation and implementation of trade policy (and laws) in accordance with local and international laws. By including small and medium enterprises (SME) and large infrastructure projects as areas of development and promotion within the mandate, a balanced outlook can be applied on all businesses - from the very small, to the very large businesses.

MED policy will focus on reducing the increasing gap between the rich and the poor by providing more opportunities to SMEs. MED will work towards increasing the role of SMEs in the major industries of tourism, fishing and farming as well as enhancing its role in newer industries such as transport. Further, MED will also work towards the introduction of new and relevant technology (and machinery) that can assist SMEs.

MED will also be extending its services to the atolls under the Governments de-centralizing plans by opening its offices in the north and south. Companies and SMEs will be able to register at their regional offices. Additionally, locally based businesses will be given priority for government contracts.

Through these and other initiatives, MED looks forward to providing economic development that benefit all regions of Maldives - at a faster pace.
