7th may 2012
A two day inception workshop, organized by the Ministry of Economic Development, has started today at the STELCO Auditorium to mark the launching of the project, “Strengthening Livelihoods Initiative for Home based Workers in the SAARC region” in the Maldives– an initiative funded under the social window of the SAARC Development Fund (SDF). The workshop started with opening remarks delivered by State Minister of Economic Development, Mr. Abdulla Ameen and Mr. Karma, Chief Executive Officer of the SDF. The two day workshop is being held to finalize the work program for the Maldives in consultation with the stakeholders.
The Project is being implemented in all SAARC countries except India and has been on-going since 2008. At SAARC regional level, the project implementation is led by the Self-Employed Workers Association (SEWA) and Home Net South Asia. A funding amount of US $ 1.18m has been allocated for a 2 year period from the project to support home based workers in the Maldives. Proceeds of the project will be utilized to build the capacity and skills of home based workers, particularly women and to establish a Trade Facilitation Centre to facilitate marketability and design aspects of products produced by home based workers.
In his opening remarks, State Minister highlighted that the TFC will be instrumental in addressing the market access issues faced by home based workers, micro and small businesses in the Maldives. He noted that the project aim is to provide much needed assistance to home based workers and small businesses to gain economic benefits and improve welfare by unleashing the creative and entrepreneurial potential of such workers and businesses.
The meeting was attended by officials from related government ministries, co-operative societies operating in the fields of marketing, arts and craft and food processing, designers, artisans, and officers from the Business Development Service Centers.
